This is the kit for cross country race day: a scored race over grass and dirt, where your place counts more than your time. It takes two courses. One is the Arizona Interscholastic Association state championships at Cave Creek Golf Course in north Phoenix, 3.1 miles, where spikes are not allowed. The other is Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, where cross country has been raced since 1912 (or 1913 or 1914, depending on who you ask), and where New York Road Runners holds a cross country 5K series this fall that is open to adults.
The thesis is that XC is two shoes and a long day. A Saucony Endorphin XC spike for the Bronx and a Saucony Kilkenny XC 10 Flat for the Arizona rule, Feetures Elite Ultra Light socks, and a Champ mesh bag for whichever pair comes back muddy. A Tracksmith Van Cortlandt Singlet with its sash and a Path Projects Altira split short. Skratch caffeinated chews in the start box, a Dryrobe Advance and a Matador Pocket Blanket for the team camp, Supergoop! for an open course, and OOFOS clogs for after. On the wrist, a Suunto Run for the splits and a Vaer C5 Field Solar that only tells the time.
Note.
Confirm current pricing at the retailer. The Arizona state meet is a high school championship: athletes qualify through the sectionals, and spectator tickets are sold on GoFan only, with no cash. Spikes are not allowed at the Arizona sectionals or the state meet. The NYRR Cross Country Series #3 is open to adult runners, was listed as near capacity when we checked, and entry fees are non-refundable and may not be deferred or transferred. Check each race’s final instructions on footwear.

Not a place to run your fastest.
“Though athletes do run fast at VCP, it’s not a place to run your fastest. It never has been.”
MileSplit — Course of History: Van Cortlandt Park (Paul Snyder)
Paul Snyder’s history of Van Cortlandt Park starts with glaciers. When they receded about 17,000 years ago, they gave the 1,146 acres that became the park its shape: “a vast field which erupts into ridges and undulating hillside.” Races start fast on the Parade Ground, “the Flats.” On the 2.5-mile high school course, runners have about a quarter of a mile to sort themselves out before the Cow Path, then climb Freshman Hill and cross a bridge over a highway into the Back Hills, roughly 2 kilometers of what Snyder calls “quad-searing” hills. The final kilometer drops back to the Flats for a sprint to the finish.
The city first improved the footing in 1979 and refurbished it again in 1997, when a painted steel tortoise-and-hare statue went in. That is Snyder’s point: “athletes tend to be awarded for their patience at Van Cortlandt Park, even with a faster surface.” Go out too hard and the Back Hills take it back. Race the people around you, not the watch.

DC Rainmaker’s Ray Maker: “Priced at $249, the Suunto Run comes in strong.”
DC Rainmaker — Suunto Run In-Depth Review · May 13, 2025
Why Suunto Run here: It is light enough to forget on the wrist in a race, and Maker found its GPS held well “down along some cliff edges in the trees.” Afterward it shows how much time you lost in the Back Hills. Honest caveats from the same review: he found optical heart rate weaker than Garmin’s, and he says the charger’s magnets are “wimpier than trying to use a single square of toilet paper after Taco Bell.”

40 mm 316L stainless steel field watch with a domed sapphire crystal, a locking screw-down crown, 10ATM water resistance, and an Epson VS-42 solar quartz movement. Vaer says six hours of light gives six months of power reserve. Photographed: C5 Field Black Solar on khaki nylon.
AllOutdoor’s Patrik Orcutt: “The dial’s legibility was great. White numerals contrasted sharply against the black matte background.”
AllOutdoor — Review: VAER C5 Field Solar 40mm Watch · Jul 11, 2025
Why go analog for cross country: Snyder’s line about Van Cortlandt is the case for it: “it’s not a place to run your fastest.” Van Cortlandt’s high school course is 2.5 miles and Cave Creek’s is 3.1, so a time from one tells you little about the other. The result that counts is your place. A plain field watch tells you when to start the warm-up, when to strip down, and when to get to the box, with nothing to charge in a team tent. Orcutt liked the solar movement for the same reason: “I do hate having to charge the smartwatches in my collection.” AllOutdoor also reports that Vaer assembles “a significant portion of its watches” in Scottsdale. Honest caveat: Orcutt notes that at about $350, “some might argue the price is high for a quartz-powered watch, even a solar one.”
Pair them. The Vaer runs the day: warm-up, strides, the box, the gun. The Suunto keeps the splits for the bus ride home. Snyder’s piece is MileSplit’s “Course of History: Van Cortlandt Park” (Jul 9, 2026).
