This is the absolute equipment closet for an ARWS expedition adventure race like Expedition Africa — “Back to the Berg” in the Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal. Teams of four, unsupported, non-stop. Bikes: you bring. Kayaks: organizer Fluid Synergy sit-on-tops. The master list at the top covers every discipline line — including items supplied by the organizer rather than carried by athletes.
Race facts below come from arworldseries.com and expafrica.net. Mandatory gear follows the ARWS list and Expedition Africa published equipment notes — always check the current race book before you pack.
Note.
Product photos match linked items. Anti-chafe, tape, and meds aren’t medical advice. GPS navigation is restricted under ARWS Rules — map-and-compass is the race. Mandatory lists change — check the current race book.

Map, team, stomach, sleep
“Teams are expected to navigate using a map and landmarks… travel throughout the day and night. They can decide if, when and where to rest.”
expafrica.net — Adventure Concept · ARWS Explainer
Expedition Africa is an ARWS Africa World Championship Qualifier. The 2026 Berg edition returns the race to uKhahlamba / Drakensberg after a hiatus, with new co-directors Franco Olivier and Damon de Boor. Watercraft are provided; teams still bring PFDs, paddles (or request organizer paddles), and the ARWS mandatory kit.
Nutrition for 5–7 day expeditions is a different sport: Wild&Co’s expedition guide pushes ~200–300 kcal/hr on the move, real food + gels, and freeze-dried TA meals — variety over hero gels.

Train map-and-compass until it’s boring. Practice night bike with mandatory lights. Sleep is a team decision. This page is a field kit for that kind of effort — attributed, not a finish-line memoir. Check the current race book for rope specifics and any GPS-seal procedures.

“The Drakensberg will host the return of Expedition Africa… UNESCO World Heritage site… locally known as uKhahlamba (Barrier of Spears).”

Gear drops · official schedule + ARWS rules
The transition desk
EA schedules gear drop for Bike Box / Kayak Bag / Box A & B before the start. ARWS: if mandatory gear is used or lost on a leg, replace it at the next transition. Missing kit can mean penalties or DQ.
Cable ties and refuse bags appear on EA race-specific lists for resealing boxes and waste — confirm the current PDF. Night contact with media/supporters is restricted (22:00–04:00 on route per EA media notes).
Box A / B · common practice
Shoes · sleep · fuel
Extra trek shoes (EA recommended), sock stacks, freeze-dried TA meals, battery banks, dry layers, and blister desk. Restock first-aid items consumed on course before the next leg.

Liquid + real food
Liquid calories help on paddle/bike; real food saves the stomach over days. Test everything in training.
Smartwatch + Analog
Watch Desk
Two lanes on the wrist: COROS Apex 2 for training load, elapsed time, and battery discipline — and Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical for time-only when screens die. ARWS prohibits GPS devices for navigation (position/maps/distance). Map-and-compass is mandatory. Phones are for emergency use under seal. Confirm the year’s device rules in the race book before you tape anything.
Smartwatch
COROS Apex 2
Premium outdoor GPS watch — useful for training and elapsed-time discipline. On race: do not use GPS navigation features prohibited by ARWS. Photographed: Apex 2.
ARWS Rules of Competition restrict GPS devices that show position, maps, or navigational information — sealed emergency phones and organizer trackers are the usual exceptions.
ARWS Rules of Competition · Mandatory Equipment List · COROS Apex 2
Expedition wrist: Train with the computer. Race with the compass. If the race book allows a watch with GPS disabled/sealed, follow that procedure exactly.
Analog
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical
Manual-wind field watch — time-only presence when batteries and screens are liabilities. Photographed: Khaki Field Mechanical.
Field watches exist for dirty, wet, multi-day work — elapsed stage timing without a glowing map.
Hamilton Khaki Field · expedition analog desk
Why analog on an AR: When GPS is banned for nav and the phone is sealed, a luminous field watch still answers “how long until dawn.” Pair with the Suunto MC-2 — not instead of it.
Pair them. Apex 2 for training and battery awareness. Khaki Field for time-only. Suunto MC-2 (×2 per team) for the race. Organizer SPOT/tracker as directed.
