This is the closet for dry wash and arroyo miles: Cave Creek flood terraces, braided Sonoran channels, Anza-Borrego wash floors where the surface flips from firm gravel to soft sand over buried rock. Not dune flotation. Not creek fords. Not Sedona slickrock or cinder cones. Heat, grit, ankle-roll risk, and navigation when the braid splits.
The thesis is protective cushion plus debris control plus heat carry. A Nike Zegama 2 — ZoomX over firmer SR-02 carrier foam, Vibram Megagrip, built-in ankle gaiter — for soft-over-hard wash beds. An Altra Trail Gaiter for the grit the sock collar cannot stop. A light Nathan QuickStart vest and SpeedDraw handheld for water without ultra bulk. On the wrist, Apple Watch Ultra 4 for dual-frequency GPS in braided channels, and a Boldr Venture Wayfarer on nylon for grit and heat when the screen can wait.
Note.
Confirm current pricing at the retailer. Dry washes flash-flood after storms — do not enter slots or narrow arroyos if rain is upstream. Spur Cross trails can be muddy after rain; bridges wash out. Anza-Borrego Palm Wash slots are a flash-flood trap. Carry more water than the distance suggests. Soft pockets hide hardpan and cobble — shorten the stride when the braid softens.

Up and down through washes and arroyos
“Whichever way you go, you basically climb for five miles, traverse up and down through a series of washes and arroyos for five miles, and then descend for five miles.”
iRunFar — Trail Love Letter: The Pemberton Trail (Andy Jones-Wilkins)
AJW’s New Year’s loop on Arizona’s Pemberton Trail is a love letter to desert singletrack that still has to cross the wash network: “the last of what seemed like 100 dusty washes” on the way home. That is the job on this page — not a dune slog, and not a wet ford — dusty braided channels that interrupt the rhythm and fill a shoe collar with grit.
Trail Runner Magazine’s Matt Hage puts the footing plainly after getting lost in Joshua Tree washes: “Second to the maintained trails, the best features to run in the park are the washes, which typically feature firm gravel footing and a guaranteed easy gradient.” Search out the firm gravel; expect soft pockets; slow down when the braid turns sandy over rock.

From the field
Maricopa County Parks on Spur Cross: trails are “unimproved with areas of unstable footing,” and after heavy rain “where trails cross the creek, they may be flooded.” Boca Grande Wash is a usually dry tributary off the Dragonfly corridor — sand and rock in the same step.

“This beautiful trail loops around the riparian area on both sides of Cave Creek.”
Maricopa County Parks — Spur Cross trail map (Dragonfly Trail)
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area (2,154 acres of upper Sonoran Desert) ties into Cave Creek washes and flood terraces. Dragonfly is a 1.0-mile moderate loop along the creek corridor; Boca Grande links uplands to riparian habitat; Spur Cross Trail runs about 5.3 miles as part of the Maricopa Trail toward Tonto National Forest. Park notes: unimproved footing, muddy after rain, possible flooded crossings. Hours: 5 a.m.–9 p.m. May–October; 6 a.m.–8 p.m. November–April. Entry fee at the trailhead. Check conditions after storms — recent visitor notes have reported washed-out bridges.

South Fork Palm Wash · Calcite Mine Road
“At the heart of all this badness is Palm Wash… V-shaped canyons, 100-foot-deep slots, and a vast maze of sandstone.”
Weekend Sherpa — Hiking the Palm Wash Slot Canyons
The elsewhere twin. From S-22 near mile 38 (Calcite Mine Road), South Fork Palm Wash is a dry wash approach into natural bridges and sandstone slots — sandy-gravel floor, heat, and maze navigation. Weekend Sherpa and AllTrails both flag flash flood risk: do not enter if rain is possible. Best cool-season months; dogs restricted on the wash routes. Call it a wash-floor day with optional slot exploring — not soft Algodones dunes.

Watch Desk
Two lanes for braided desert washes. An Apple Watch Ultra 4 — dual-frequency GPS and Max Extended battery — when the channel forks and the phone stays in the vest. A Boldr Venture Wayfarer on tough nylon for grit and heat: a titanium field watch you can read at a glance when the screen can wait.

Apple Watch Ultra 4
S11 chip, dual-frequency GPS, redesigned Health Sensing System. Outdoor workout tracking up to about 18 hours normal / about 25 hours Extended / up to about 45 hours Max Extended with one-second GPS. Photographed: Ultra 4 as linked.
Apple’s Newsroom pitch for Ultra 4: extended outdoor workout battery and “the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch.” DC Rainmaker’s hands-on frames Max Extended as full GPS + HR for up to 45 hours.
Apple Newsroom — Apple Watch Ultra 4 · DC Rainmaker Ultra 4 hands-on
Why Ultra 4 here: Braided washes confuse a single-band phone track. Dual-frequency GPS and a bright outdoor display help when the channel splits and the landmarks look the same. Use Extended / Max Extended when the wash day stacks past a short loop.

Boldr Venture Wayfarer
38 mm titanium Venture case, Miyota 8217 automatic, 200 m water resistance, sapphire crystal, 24-hour sub-dial, screw-down crown, tough nylon strap with titanium hardware. About 12 mm thick; 20 mm lug width. Photographed: Venture Wayfarer Black on nylon.
Time to Blog Watches on the Wayfarer-Black: the dark titanium case “gives this watch a rugged, tool aesthetic” with a 24-hour textured dial that “screams… abused for adventure,” and raised white numerals built for “quick glance legibility.”
Time to Blog Watches — Boldr Venture Wayfarer-Black review · Oct 10, 2024
Why go analog in a dry wash: Heat drains phones; grit hates bracelets. Set the Wayfarer at the trailhead and keep a turnaround time you can read when both hands are busy picking a line through soft-over-hard braid. Nylon shrugs off sweat and sand better than a rivet bracelet.
Pair them. Ultra 4 for the braid you are scouting — dual-freq GPS, a track back to the car, battery for a long Cave Creek or Palm Wash day. Wayfarer for the loop you know, when the plan is painted numerals and a turnaround before the heat peaks. Sand and grit belong on a tool strap, not a dress bracelet.
